An epic weekend of sport was finished off with a tantalizing final at the Melbourne Australian Open this weekend. A grueling two sets of the most sublime tennis, set audience members jaws to the floor as a truly gladiatorial fight ensued on the shimmering blue courts of the open before Andy Murray succumbed to Novak Djokovic in the fourth set.

The opening sets of last night’s final were of the highest quality tennis you’ll ever see. Twenty shot plus rallies hit at full pace from both players in the first set with regular breaks of serve that kept those watching on their toes as Djokovic became the first man in the open era to win 5 Australian Open titles. Djokovic took the first set on a tie-break but battled what seemed to be a potentially match ending ankle injury early in the second set. However, as with much of the match the momentum swung again just a few games after he seemed down and out, Djokovic was back on top only for the momentum to swing again taking the match into its second tie-break.

Murray was the eventual winner of the second set and looked to have the match in his grasp steaming ahead with a break in the third. But a lack of concentration quite possibly as a result of a seemingly jaded looking Djokovic saw Murray lose control of the third set. Upon entering the fourth, it was clear that an ailing Murray body was not going to overcome his longtime friend. Upon reflection of the tournament as a whole, it was a great success for us Aussies! Nick Kyrgios made the quarter finals and became the first Aussie to do so since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005 and we had even more young success with Bernard Tomic making it to the fourth round having overcome compatriot Sam Groth in the third round. Possibly one of the most exciting prospects of the tournament was Thanasi Kokkinakis who lost to Groth in the second round after a stunning upset against eleven seed, Earnests Gulbis in the first round. Kyrgios’ run in the tournament marks another leap forward in his career with the teenager looking destined for grand slam greatness in the near future. It is clear the ability and intensity is there and with a continued improvement of his mental game, while curbing an often overly ambitious shot selection that he will continue to rise in the ATP rankings and hopefully one day return to do what Djokovic so marvelously did last night.

One player he might find in the final there is Grigor Dimitrov; now 23 years of age, the youngster showed great class in what was undoubtedly the second best match of the tournament against Andy Murray in the fourth round. He has recently broken into the top ten and looks set to become one of the players to beat this year. Together, he and Kyrgios are our players to watch this ATP calendar year!
